Relocation

Relocation and Emotional Wellbeing

Relocation is a major life transition. Even when the move is chosen or exciting, it can stir up anxiety, sadness, loneliness and a sense of disorientation—for adults and for children.

As an Asian diaspora who has lived in Canada, China and the Middle East, and who now divides time between the UK and Hong Kong, I understand first‑hand how difficult it can be to settle in a new country, make sense of different systems and rebuild a sense of home.

Some jobs and postings require families to move every 2 to 4 years, which can add ongoing stress to relationships, schooling, friendships and the sense of belonging for both adults and children.

For some people, relocation happens in the context of separation or post‑divorce arrangements, sometimes involving children moving between countries or households.  In other cases, the move is for work, study or family reasons, but still re‑awakens earlier losses or difficult experiences.

What we can work on

  • Adjusting to a new culture, school or work environment.

  • Supporting children through moves between countries or between parents’ homes.

  • Managing homesickness, isolation and the grief of leaving people and places behind.

  • Making sense of how past experiences and current stresses interact, so the move feels more manageable.

How I offer support

I work with adults and parents who are navigating relocation—whether as a single move, repeated moves, or relocation linked to separation or divorce.  Sessions can be in person during my time in Hong Kong, or online when I am in the UK or travelling, so support can continue across locations.

If you are finding it hard to settle, or are worried about how relocation is affecting you or your children, you are welcome to contact me for an initial conversation about what might help.
